- I think you left out the most important factor affecting 28.8. Being
- an ISP I can guarantee you the following to be the case. Folks use a
- line which often has many telephones or answering machines on it.
- Even though they are not "off hook", they add capacitance to the line
- and enough impedence that the bandwidth is severely constricted. My
- advice to someone who is serious about maximizing speed is to bring
- the line directly to an A/B switch next to the computer, when in the A
- position all the phones are connected to the line, in the B position
- only the modem is connected.
